The annual release of Unity, a collaborative brew by the Los Angeles County Brewers Guild, marks the start of the L.A. Beer Week season and will return on June 6, 2018 with a special double-can release from this year’s host brewery Los Angeles Ale Works. This year’s iteration of the community-driven beer merges both the hazy northeast-style IPA and the clear west coast IPA in a dual release to showcase two different yeast characteristics.
The Unity tradition was started by Eagle Rock Brewery back in 2012 as a way to engage with L.A.’s budding brewing community. It has since become synonymous with L.A. Beer Week and the start of the summer beer festival season. Over 90 L.A. Brewers Guild brewery representatives from over 60 independent breweries congregated at LA Ale Works in early May to celebrate another year of craft beer camaraderie and collaboration.
Both beers clock in at 7% ABV and will take on flavors of El Dorado and Idaho 7 hops, but the west coast and east coast will also feature Simcoe and Mandarina Bavaria hops respectively. The west coast is fermented with the classic Cali 01 yeast strain while Sach Trois was utilized for the juicy version. The recipes result in a classic, dry west coast IPA with a dank finish for the west coast and a softer, full-bodied hazy IPA with lower bitterness and a tropical finish.
This year’s cans were designed by Ken Barnes of BSR Branding and features the iconic Los Angeles City Hall. A special neon was also created by Leaf Cutter Studio as a new tradition for every future Unity host brewery to inherit year after year. Unity will be available in both draft and cans in early July and will be featured at the L.A. Beer Week Kickoff Festival on June 16th.
